The wolves take the infant girl to raise, and name her Mowglii. Each tribe takes a child with them to raise as their own and carve out their own territories without crossing boundaries and causing the war to start up again.
There is an overarching story here that involves a massive jungle war between the different “tribes” of animals (wolves, tigers, elephants, apes) that comes to a sort of armistice upon the arrival of four shipwrecked little children, the youngest being an infant little girl. The first thing you need to know is that Miller is not doing what Kipling did in stringing together disparate stories about the jungle. Unfortunately, I feel like I need to hit the highlights of Miller's approach so that you can make an informed decision. I almost hesitate to tell you and let it all unfold for you as it did for me. Instead, I immediately had my expectations upset in very cool ways. So I went into this comic with a presumptive expectation that it was going to be a straightforward either adaptation or continuation of the story of Mowgli, the wolf boy and his jungle friends. Instead I was forced to go to the books, where I got so much more than what was adapted to the Disney cartoon. Were I a child today, I probably would have just watched the Disney cartoon on DVD until it melted.
As a child, they were stories I read and reread many times. I am a fan of the original stories by Kipling. Everyone is at least generally familiar with the characters of Kipling's JUNGLE BOOK (even if it's only the Disney cartoon) and the best thing about this comic is that the characters are “familiar”, and yet it is a wonderfully new approach to the story.
